Think xenophobic, anti-unions, paternalistic and interventionist with our indigines, stingy-pursed with public education, over-cautious with business, fawning over big business and not firm enough with climate change.

Our electorate has been retained by Labour's Peter Garrett (formerly of rock band Midnight Oil) despite a 7.4% swing against him.

What's a hung Parliament? Do you actually get to hang someone? Is it like Pea's weird election where people have to make deals now and the public is out of it?

Well, nine hours later it appears neither party has the 76 seats it needs to govern. Labour has lost its numbers, possibly as a backlash to the dumping of Rudd. There appear to be more Independents and a Green, which Greens leader Bob Brown predicts will rise to nine, giving Greens power in the Senate. So far, with not all votes counted, it appears Gillard has only just retained leadership but to actually govern will have to work with the Independents and Greens on every issue, act and bill. Tedious, by the sound of it.

Did you hear about the little voting place debacle in Western Australia? Apparently in one rural area there someone seriously underestimated the number of ballot papers needed and they ran out, forcing them to close for a few hours until more were rustled up from somewhere else. When they reopened voting resumed, apparently in a bit of a flurry, as scrutineers found about 100 of the votes were not signed by officials, making them void.
So if the balance of power comes down to 100 votes in WA, those polling place volunteers responsible might find themselves the butt of all jokes there for a while. And Oz might have a fence-sitting government that reflects our just desserts.
