In Neal Stephenson's scifi book The Diamond Age he described a matter replicator which built, for example, a bicycle, from digital instructions.
Here's a real life example of the 3D Printer that makes anything you can scan.
On the show that I saw about this, you could make shoes for your child, shred them when the child outgrew them, and recycle the material to make a bigger size.

In Diamond Age the poor and starving of Third World countries were fed synthetic rice. From memory it was made from recycled plastic and garbage. Better than soylent green, maybe.
