Interesting, isn't it, that coarse public taste determined the scurrilous nature of NOTW in the first place, and now public distaste at their tactics has determined their demise.
Murdoch would not have pulled the plug on the tabloid if it were not a hip-pocket decision.

Yeah, the coarsened public appears SHOCKED, SHOCKED, I tell you, that a tabloid would delete voice mail and upset a grieving family. Now if the grieving family had been that of Posh Spice or a naughty royal whispuring about tampons to his lady love, you may be sure that NOTW would still be continuing its hacking ways. Ughhh, we're sech hypocrites. [PLite settles down to watch horny soap opera featuring journo sleeping wid the Horse Guard & a wood floor refinisher.]

Lucian Freud died at 88 of an undisclosed illness. This painting by Freud sold for $33 million, the highest ever for a living artist. (Well, he wuz living a few days ago.)

Why is that worth $33 million? I don't understand art.

I dunno. Perhaps its becuz of the hyper-realism? Sometimes it took him years to finish something, you know. He could take a whole day just mixing his paints and never actually touching the canvas. He always wiped his brush after one or two brushstrokes. And almost all his portraits made you look hideous! Eeeeek! Heres the BBC report on his life. www.bbc.co.uk/news/entertainment-arts-14242800

I remember having a model of such voluptuous proportions at art school. She was more fun to draw (lovely free arcs and round strokes of the charcoal) than the skinny model with hips like shark fins.
But the way Lucien Freud has painted this model's flesh is repulsive. I can almost smell her, and it's not good.

Actually I took Life Drawing in university, and youre right, its the fat people who are most interesting to draw. All those overhanging folds & billows & indentations & shadowy creases. I had great fun in those courses, but I wuz not willing to starve in an artists garret, selling my stuff in Covent Garden so art is just a hobby now.
If Freud painted her smell, then he is indeed a Freaking Great Artist!

Is there a point to repulsive art?

Whuts repulsive to you isnt necessarily repulsive to others. I find the painting interesting and I appreciate the skill it took to create it. I would certainly hang it in my house (even though it would clash wid my toile drapes) rather than hang those ridiculous doodles of Picasso.

Is there a point to repulsive art? This painting turns the concept of beautiful models on it's head and forces you to ask, "is a beautiful painting beautiful because of the subject or because of the artist's technique?" It's a masterpiece worth every penny. I dunno. I made that up. I don't understand art.
