I remember reading that the reason Oz changed over to the metric system was to keep in synch with the US. It was back in 1966 - the US convinced us they were keen to change from the Imperial system, but at the last minute they reneged. Too late for us though. The amount of advertising that was involved was immense: changing tools, money systems, measuring devices, the sizes of nails, screws, shoes, clothes, furniture, medical and pharmaceutical measurements, new stamps, new money, new weighing machines, recalibrated cash registers, maths, science, carpentry, engineering, plumbing and architectural text books etc, etc.
So after we learned the US were not going ahead but were sticking with the Imperial system we still went ahead because it had already cost so much.
Ironic that the US is still with the Imperial system, really.
It must be a total pain in Canada.

I thought I posed in here. Hmm.. Anyway, have you ever seen one of these? I made it. It's a Mason Bee house. Bees lay their eggs in those holes. This is my Cosmos! 4 have sprouted so far. Woohoo! I don't know the name of this flower but my mom says it's called Cempazuchi. That's an Aztec word. Don't know much else about it.

We can has bees! But my mom wants to kill them because they are leaf cutter bees which make their homes from rose leaves. Like this. They take the leaves and make cute little tubes out of them then they live inside. In other garden news, I just harvested 2 more zucchinis for a total of 7 courgettes this year. Also, I emailed The Dirt Doctor and he gave me some advice. He says to use activated charcoal to soak up the toxic chemicals in my garden then add bacteria that eats that stuff. It's an organic solution. I think I read that charcoal makes soil alkaline, which I already have, but I think it will be okay. I'd rather deal with that than chemicals. In arcane knowledge news, did you know it's poop that determines soil PH? Bacteria poop makes soil alkaline while fungi poop makes soil acidic. I read it in the book Teaming with Microbes.

I dont suppose its mentioned that human poops will improve your organic garden? Although, in many Asian countries in days of yore (like JAPAN!), human poops wuz collected from each house in the village and thiz wuz called night soil.
Is Dirt Doctor famous? Leaf cutter bees are cute! I dont want to kill any bees, there are so few now.

The subject of poop is very taboo with Tyler even with me. Never discussed and if the topic ever comes up he tries very hard to change it.

Cats as beneficial garden helpers!I may have found a good use for cats besides target practice! When life gives you cats, make cat aides! I think you will like this post Avrils. So today I am reading about compost. Compost this and compost that, blah, blah, blah, then I get to the part that says if compost has an ammonia smell it may be full of anaerobic bacteria and I should turn the pile, or maybe it is too wet, or maybe it has the wrong kind of stuff in it. Then I lay the book down on my chest and think on it. During that moment I remember how cats like to poop in compost bins and how cats also like to poop in places that smell like urine, which smells like ammonia. Bam! A disparate connection is made and I realize cats can be useful! Since a cat's sense of smell is 14 times better than a human's I will know when it's time to turn my pile when cats try to poop in it! ;D Their sensitive noses will know long before I do when my pile is turning anaerobic and smells like ammonia! YaY!! ;D If a cat sniffs my compost pile and squats it gets a rock and I turn the compost pile, if it sniffs and walks away we both live together in harmony and the compost pile doesn't need to be turned. (But don't think you can just come in my yard whenever you want you stupid cat. You're still a cat.) ;D
