I'm about to cook Sunday lunch.
River trout steamed on leeks, braised in Sauvignon Blanc, on a bed of zucchini and whole button mushrooms, with asparagus and snow peas. Served with oven roasted sweet potato and celeriac cubes.
Mmmm.

Having poke. Its ahi ----our word for yellowfin tuna, it's a raw fish salad, flavored with soy sauce, sesame oil, kukui and some seaweed.

Hey Shoey, FoodGurl,
Are you and Tyler sushi people? Have you ever prepared sushi? I find it easier to make sushi rather than cook and I was wondering if people who cook feel the same.
PS. Feel free to answer --- peeps, not just Shoey.

I love sushi. However, being coeliac and having recently been accidentally gluten-poisoned by the catering at a four and a half star hotel, I can't have iodine or any iodine-containing seafood for another two years while my intestinal villi regrow. Only fresh water fish for me. No seaweed either! And only tamari. (Soy sauce has wheat in it.)

Tyler likes to have sushi every now and then. I use to refuse to eat sushi period. I gave it two good attempts in my life the first a total disaster (lets just say I was running to the bathroom fast and I wanted so much to be able to eat it that tears were coming out of the sides of my eyes from my efforts of trying to eat it and not being able to).
Since I met Tyler (close to 5 years ago) he has wanted to eat sushi with me, and I always flat out refused. The other day I was checking out one of the food blogs I frequent and the blogger had visited a sushi restaurant and had lots of photos and descriptions of the sushi, and I thought maybe I can handle this. So I called Tyler to see if he wanted to eat sushi with me. I ordered some take out sushi in which Tyler (with my input) selected what we would get and I went to get it. I was soooo very nervous about trying to eat it again after my previous bad experience with it. HOwever it was okay. I can't eat it the way most people do though. I guess one is suppose to put the whole roll or piece in ones mouth in one bite. I can't do this though. I have a very small mouth, so its uncomfortable to do this and wrecks the experience (what I did the first time around). So eating it in two or three bites I am able to eat it. I ate two different kinds (three rolls total) in one sitting with Tyler. That was a world record for me.
The sushi was okay. Way better then what I had previously had. It's still not a favourite food one mine, but I am very happy to be able to say, yes I can eat sushi.
On a sadder note though I had the sushi with some soy sauce. I have a possible soy allerergy (unconfirmed) and I seemed to have a major allergic reaction the morning after eating the sushi, so either it was the soy or the pollen was very bad outside (I'm thinking it was the soy though because my allergies were fine before eating the sushi). So I will once again be avoiding soy which is in sooo many foods (well I never stopped avoiding it but I did get more lax since I don't know for sure if its an allergy or a sensitivity.

Try tamari? what is this? Fermented soy sauce, as Sunny said, but without the wheat that soy sauce traditionally has in it. You can buy tamari in a health food or Japanese food store.
